David Fincher - Biography

What is Intertextuality?
Intertextuality is the reference of one media text (Cinema/Film, Music Video, Television and Articles) in another media text.  This often means that both texts share an audience in some way because they wouldn't understand the reference otherwise.

Intersexuality in Television

Intertextuality and Music Video

Intertextuality and Music Video:
Madona - Material Girl
Marilyn Monroe - Diamonds are a girls best friend

An inter-textuality is applied here, as in Marilyn's music video, she is wearing a very pink tube dress, with hand scarf matching her dress, good looking men in suits with red tie, and the setting looks absolutely identical as the pink and red background colour they have used is also been in use in Madonna's MV. Both Marilyn and Madonna is carrying a black lace fan to seduce and reject men surround the 2 singers. People who are fan of madonna would have seen the Marilyn's movie and thought that Madonna has copied Marilyn. The 2 singers shares the same fanbase as they are both seen as "sassy" women and women who to look up to.

Essay

I think that the collective identity of youth has changed overtime, I think it has gone worse because of the influence of and media. Collective identity is representation of a group of subject or a group of something which represents either a positive, negative or both opinion. There are more than 1 opinion to this, can be 20 opinions which makes it a collective identity. With my collective identity, I am going to focus on the historical representation which are : polite, clever, gentlemanly, activated/motivated, courteous and friendly. The contemporary representation are : lazy, naughty, dumb, pointless, rude, and selfish.I am going to research some American and British TV programmes and films to investigate which representation it can refer to and if any media text which goes against their representation. The reason why I think this is because TV shows like "The Carrie Diaries", and "Press Gang" represents teenagers as "well behaved" "well mannered".For example:Throughout "the Carrie Diaries" the main character, "Carrie" is an innocent girl who has a dream to work in Manhattan as a writer and although she is rebellious later on, comparing to how teenage girls are represented in contemporary shows such as "90210", "Misfits" and "Skins", girls are seen as "slutty" and "easy" such character like "Naomi" from "90210" who slept with a guy just to make her ex-boyfriend jealous. In "the Carrie Diaries" Carrie does have a boyfriend but waits and plans to when to have sex which presents girls in historical representation that in that time, girls were more responsible, mature and less revealing. Shows which has contemporary representation represents girls in a negative way because of these reasons. This can apply to guys also. In shows such as "Geordie shore", "Ex on the Beach", "The Valleys", these show all represent guys as "non-caring" and only cares about "sex". Also the girls would get with guys that they'd met only 2 hours ago. Their behaviour when drunk is also unacceptable, they will be fighting and also break their loyalty towards one and other. The use of language is different also, there is a lot of swearing and using inappropriate words through out the show however, in shows like the Carrie Diaries, they are well behaved and are less hostile. However, in films like "quadrophenia" and "kids" goes against the representation of historical representation on youths, and in films such as "Disturbia" and "Harry Potter" the youths are portrayed as "Heroic" and "Hard-Working" adolescents. For example:In the film "Kids" (1995) a young boy catches HIV by having sex with uncountable girls at such a young age and continues to do so even after knowing he is carrying an infection, also finding it as a joke how he is spreading the infection. This goes against the historical representation as the way the children acts in "Kids" is worse than the representation that the contemporary carries as-well. In the film "Quadrophenia" (1979) the 2 rival, mods and the rockers fight by the bay on the beach just because they are in a different group, also the mods purpose of travelling to Brighton beach is to buy some drugs. This is obviously the dispute to the historical representation as the behaviour is un-polite or barely legal. To conclude, I do agree that the collective identity of youth has changed over time and also it has gone worse because of the influence of and media as although there were few movies which were against the historical representation,  during the period when Quadrophenia and Kids were produced and exhibited (1970, 1990) majority of men did not act as if they did in the films because they were brought up differently with dicipline and saw the films as only "stories" so it's odd to act as how you would in a fantasy world in real life, but nowadays, young adults or children who aren't even in their teenage years, get in to trouble with the police. Also stupid young people think it is "cool" to be arrested which was something very embarrassing in the 1900's, so not only the media text has changed youths representation over time, I believe that it also has changed the behaviour and how they feel about certain events.

Artist Research - Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift - 1898
My next artist that I have decided to research is taylor Swift, her latest album released is 1989 and it was released on the October 27th 2014. It has 13 songs and the singles are "Shake it Off", 2nd single - "Blank Space", 3rd single - "Style" and 4th single - "Bad Blood".

This is the first single cover, "Shake it Off" it fits in the polaroid theme with all the other single cover. The lyric of the song is also written below the photograph by taylor herself. Her signature red lip stick is always on show.

This is the 2nd single cover and again, you can see the bright red lipstick on show. Also this is another polaroid print ad agin has some of the lyrics from the song below the photograph written by Taylor.

This is the 2rd single cover, again it has used the same theme of polaroid prints and also the album cover. The reason to use the same theme is so the fans and audiences, when they see this another single cover, they will know it's for the album "1989". Also what Taylor is wearing are quite the same, a different coloured sequin bomber jacket.

This is the 3rd single cover for "Style". Like the 2 single covers above, they have some similarities with the filter of the polaroid prints and Taylor writing the lyrics of the song on the white border, although there is a change of clothing and this photograph shots Taylors body also, which is different to the 2 above.

This is the 4th single cover for "Bad Blood" which has a completely different theme to the polaroid prints, it has a black and white effect and the title of the song is written in bold block red colour font, also it features a quote, however not sang in the song, this is there to express what kind of song "Bad Blood" is. However the red lipstick is still in use and the use of black and white filter has made a shadow and plumped her lips. I noticed that between all of the single covers are that there is only Taylor in the photographs, whether it features another artist or not. This song "Bad Blood" is actually a special single as in the MV there are many of Taylor's celebrity friends such as Gigi Hadid, Selena Gomez, Zendaya and Ellie Golding. The celebrities who features in the MV also has a profile-like "covers" of their own to "Bad Blood". They all have a role of a character in the MV and on each cover it says who is which character.
Here are some example of those:

They all have the same black and filter, and the title of the song "Bad Blood" are in the same block font and red, and in smaller font in white it says who is which character. The profile are all related to each other and Taylors original single cover so the fans know that in the MV "Bad Blood" there are all of these characters in it.

The "Bad Blood" MV was advertised through social media such as Twitter, Facebook and Instagram:

With Taylor's 63.5M (twitter), 72M (Facebook), and 46,7M (Instagram) world wide followers she can advertise her new single's MV to the world with no extra cost.

Taylor Swift - RED
This is another Taylor Swift's album which came out before "1989".

I noticed that the "Red" album cover and the "1989" album cover is very similar as if you look closely, the 2 covers try and hides upper half of Taylor's face, which concentrates on Taylor's signature red lipstick, and very simply photographed. This album "Red" contains 16 songs you can listen to including 4 singles.

The first single, "We are never ever getting back together" was released  on 23rd of August. The album cover has a similar warm-toned filter as the polaroid prints for "1989". The signature red-lipstick is always on show and the colour that is frequently used are cream-white, red and black, which makes it stand out form the nature green background.

This is the 2nd single cover, again, her eyes are barely notice-able as the shadow of her fringe is covering up her eyes. Taylor is wearing the same clothing as the "We are never ever getting back together" sing cover, which suggests that this single is related to the first single and is continuous, perhaps singing about the same guy.

The 3rd single, "Begin Again" is very different to the 2 single covers above, as the phtograph has been taken in a completely different location/setting and has more of a calm vibe. The colour scheme is also different as the filter is warm-toned and mainly concentrates on creamy-white colour and simple black title.

This is the 4th single cover for album "RED", the title of the song "22" is written in big bold font in red, and Taylors name also in big bold font in white. Which makes it stand out from her bright red jeans. This single cover's photograph was again taken in a different location/setting and different clothing, but never forgetting her signature red-lipstick.

By the use of bold, and bright colours it helps the audience understand what kind of genre the songs will be. The bright colours will express "pop" and as the 4 single albums were taken in a location where its nature-free, it may give some impression of "country" like genre, however by the title of the songs, it may give a strong meaning of her feelings.

Artist Research - Lana Del Rey

Artist Research - Lana Del Rey

Lana Del Rey - Honeymoon

The 13th album Lana is releasing on the 18th of September is called "Honeymoon" which contains 14 songs.

The single in the album "Honeymoon" is "High by the beach" and the promotion single is "Terrance loves you".

The two single covers has the same font for "LANA DEL REY" and the same font for the title of the single, also the 2 titles are quite bent. Also, the 2 covers use the same baby pink colour for "LANA DEL REY". However, the scenery is very different, as for "High by the beach" cover displays Lana on a yacht and the clothing she is wearing are pastel coloured and she seems relaxed.

But in the "Terrance Loves You" cover, firstly the filter is in black and white, and the scenery is completely different as she is standing in the middle of a road and looks no where near the beach. The hair and costume is very different also, in the photo above, Lana has a fringe which makes her look younger and wearing something more simple, a plain white shirt.

What I have realised with Lana Del Rey's album covers are that they all use the same props such as the cars. The cover below is an album released in 2014.
Another similarities the two covers has are the title of her name.

The singles in "Ultraviolence" are "Ultraviolence" and "West Coast". The cover for "West Coast" looks like this:

The colour scheme are different as the album is in black and white, however the "West Coast" single cover is in colour and has a yellow-green filter. However, they use the same type of font, and same position with the text. Another thing I noticed which are the same is the face expression Lana is showing. Even though the cover is in colour, the MV is in black and white.

Thus, in the "Brooklyn Baby" single cover, again, Lana is sitting in the same car, same clothing and same theme of black and white filters. The cover "Brooklyn Baby" and "Shades of cool" are both in white block capital for the title, and also they have used low key lighting, medium close up, and similar composition. By looking through all of the album and single covers, Lana Del Rey's style is very timeless, I feel that the "Ultraviolnece", "Brooklyn Baby" and "Shades of Cool" all look like a 70's Film Noir film. The atmosphere is very gloomy, it's dark, and becoming very retro.

This screen is what comes up first thing, as you can see to sell out the latest album, they are using the website to advertise and also changed their website links such as "Enter Site" in the same colour scheme as the "Honeymoon" album.

On the website, there are 7 links, which are "News", "Live", "Music", "Gallery", "YouTube", "Store", and "Sign in" for members. The words are in the same font as "LANA DEL REY" in block letters and also following the "Navy Blue" and "Red" colour scheme.

This is the "News" page. This page is where you can find latest news of Lana and discover her latest MV's and events. as well as when is the next album coming out, and any general information about Lana.

This is the "Live" page, this page has links to Lana's live performance and also Lana's instagram to keep up with her social media.

This is the "Music" page, on this page you have links to the latest albums as well as the 4 professional albums like the "Born to Die".

Again, this is just another example of how you can listen to Lana's albums.

When you click on one of the albums (just like I did), the list of songs in the album and the name shows up with a link to Spotify music so you can listen to the song for free right there.
This applies to every other album shown.

This is the "Gallery" page, on the gallery page you can view photographs which photoshoots and magazines Lana had participated in.

You can click on the images to view which photograph to view, I chose "Ultraviolence" as I am familiar with the album, and there are photographs of Lana while making the MV.

This is the "Videos" page, where you can watch Lana's MV's via YouTube, VEVO.

Finally, this is the "Store" page, and there are links to Lana's latest album and CD box sets and franchises for the fans.

On the "Newsletter" link,  it takes you to where you can receive Lana's news immediately via email.

To find the information above, I have used Google search and Wikipedia.
